Former New Jersey Governor, Jim Florio, a Democrat, spoke to FOX Business Network's Liz Claman and Liz MacDonald about the economy, stimulus spending and the New Jersey education commissioner's firing over the $400 million "Race to the Top" mistake.

Excerpts below:

On Commissioner Bret Schundler's firing over the "Race to the Top" application mistake:

"It's unfortunate. There are two personalities that are very strong, the Commissioner and the Governor. You don't have to be a great psychiatrist to appreciate the fact that this is not a marriage made in heaven. So some of us are not surprised it came to this."

"I think in light of what the Governor has said, assuming the Governor is correct, that he was misinformed on a very important thing; that probably is a firing offense."

On the White House considering new stimulus measures to boost the economy:

"You get what you pay for. What we are trying to do is spur the economy. We have to have revenues to do that. If you make good investments, infrastructure investments, provide jobs, productivity, good confidence. All those things are very important. You can't just take the simplistic approach of saying ‘we're going to deal with the deficit but we don't want to stop tax cuts from going forward.'"

On whether this is a "shakeout moment" for state governments:

"I'm convinced that in the years to come, I don't know how many years, Governors from around the country will go to Washington, giving them the keys to the statehouse, saying ‘we can't do it.' The tax system that we have state after state doesn't work. We have to have a broad based tax at the federal level. And then we'll have a revenue sharing."
