It will be an extra happy Thanksgiving for Jon Corzine this year, as the former New Jersey Governor married his girlfriend Sharon Elghanayan at his penthouse in Hoboken Tuesday night.
"This is an unbelievably happy day for me, Sharon, and our family," Corzine told the Newark Star-Ledger in a prepared statement.
"When you get to share this kind of joy with your kids and grandkids, you know that you've been truly blessed. We are grateful for the many well-wishes we've received, and we wish everyone a happy and peaceful Thanksgiving holiday."
Corzine, 63, and Elghanayan, 65, took their vows amid about 25 relatives and close friends, according to Corzine spokesman Josh Zeitz. The couple had been dating since late 2004 and announced their engagement not long after Corzine lost his re-election bid last year.
In April, NJ.com reported that Corzine got engaged to Elghanayan less than three months after leaving office. Informed of the news, Gov. Chris Christie, who defeated Corzine in last year's election, offered his congratulations. "I wish them every happiness," Christie said.
NorthJersey.com reports the ceremony was conducted by state Chief Justice Stuart Rabner, a onetime Corzine aide who was named to his current post by Corzine. But because Supreme Court justices cannot make official marriage licenses, another former top Corzine aide, Superior Court Judge Ed McBride, handled the formalities.
After the ceremony the couple and their families left on a vacation to an unannounced destination.
An Associated Press report in the Courier Post says this is the second marriage for Corzine, who has three grown children. Elghanayan has now been married three times and has two grown children.
