Law to require N.J. state employees to live in state gets Assembly committee approval

njmap112009_optLegislation to require future state employees to live in New Jersey was approved Monday by the Assembly State Government Committee.

Under the bill, A-2515, all future executive, legislative and judicial branch employees – as well as workers employed by independent authorities – would be required to live in New Jersey. Out-of-state residents would be given six months to move into New Jersey before their jobs would be deemed vacant; an additional six-month extension could be granted if the initial timeframe poses a significant personal hardship.

"State workers whose salaries and benefits are paid-for by New Jersey taxpayers should be New Jersey taxpayers themselves," said Assembly Majority Leader Bonnie Watson Coleman (D-Mercer), the bill's sponsor. "Public jobs should be reserved for residents who want to show by example that New Jersey truly is a great place to work, live and raise a family."

According to the nonpartisan state Office of Legislative Services, approximately 8 percent of the state workforce lives outside of New Jersey.

"We can no longer tolerate the exportation of millions of tax dollars when that money can stay here and boost our own economy," Watson Coleman said. "It sends the wrong message when the workers charged with overseeing the operation of state government can't even bother to live among the people they serve."

The committee approved the bill 4-1.

Mr Watson Coleman has no understanding of State income tax structure. Taxes are paid to the State in which the work is done. So NJ does not lose out when NY workers come to NJ.

What if NYS did this? How many NY City and state employees are from New Jersey? We live in the United States of America! I live 5 miles from the border and now I shouldn't work there because I don't live there! I would love for NY and Penn to institute the same law. I bet the unemployment rate in NJ would rise!

I will now have to work in the same school district for the next 25 years, even though I have advanced degrees to be promoted...I will not be able to apply outside of my district because I live in NY. I went to college in NJ and earned a Masters Degree in NJ...but I choose to livein NY because it is close to my family and my husband's family. I should be penalized for this?

I want the $36,000 back I paid in out-of-state tuition because the degree I know hold is useless!

I was born and raised in Jersey. Proud of it but I am a single mother of two young children who is solely responsible for them and I work at a state run facility. Plain and simple, I can't afford NJ!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I made a fresh start for the three of us and don't feel that I should be told I have to live in any one place. I don't get financial help from their dead beat dad and I don't live off of any WELFARE agency. So I am pretty mad about this coming into play. Shame on all of you people that say you are doing good by everyone. HUH???? Give me and others like me a real break!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Don't grandfather this!!! Go to the DOT parking lot and see how many PA license plates there are...then check the plate for an address because most of them have relatives in NJ and they use ther addresses to bypass employee requirements

We should require that retirees also claim NJ as their home. Why should we send pension checks to Florida, Arizona and the Carolinas. Keep that money in NJ too.
