New Jersey qualifies for $652 million in Recovery Act highway projects

highway030310_optThe State of New Jersey reached the March 2nd deadline for job-rich highway projects funded by the Recovery Act, Congressman Frank Pallone, Jr. said on Tuesday.

March 2nd is the deadline for states to meet the qualifying requirements to get highway construction projects funded. New Jersey will receive $652 million to fund 161 projects.

"These projects will put people to work at the same time our infrastructure is repaired and improved," said Pallone. "In addition to the immediate impact of 652 million dollars, it will produce a ripple effect of indirect financial activity to help us out of the recession."

Nationally, $26.6 billion Recovery Act dollars have gone to 12,000 projects and improved 12,000 miles of highways in one year.

To qualify by Tuesday, New Jersey had to do the preliminary work of committing to the projects. New Jersey qualified for all the projects that they are eligible for.

"Now, contracts can be bid, workers can be hired and equipment can be purchased," said Pallone. "Construction projects will be the quickest for putting people to work. Acting quickly is part of the recipe for recovery."
