Mother Nature and her wrath of Hurricane Sandy took quite a toll on the Garden State last week with downed trees and numerous power outages. Residents in Northern Jersey were still trying to pick up the pieces when a small earthquake registering with a magnitude of 2.0 shook things up early Monday morning.

According to the Associated Press, the tremor rattled in Ringwood, a borough in Passaic County at 1:19 a.m., and was reported by police with no accounts, thankfully, of damage. Occurring approximately three miles below ground, the seismic activity could have also been felt in the surrounding towns of Franklin Lakes, Mahwah, Oakland, Paterson, Wanaque and West Milford.

Jessica Turner, a geophysicist at the National Earthquake Information Center, (NEIC), located on the campus of the Colorado School of Mines in Golden, Colorado, reported that some Ringwood residents remember hearing a loud boom. Turner also noted to The Associated Press that people who were on the upper floors of their homes may have felt shaking or saw objects on walls vibrating from the quake.

The last tremor that originated in the state was in Somerset County back in February of 2010 with a magnitude of 2.2. In August 2011, a significant tremor was felt in New Jersey after a quake of 5.8 magnitude originated in Virginia.
