N.J. school district to observe Muslim and Hindu holidays

SouthBrunswickmap_optSouth Brunswick is one of a handful throughout state to include Islamic holy days

Two Islamic holidays and a Hindu observation are marked on the South Brunswick School District's 2010-11 school-year calendar.

The New Jersey school district will be shut down for Eid al-Fitr, the end of Ramadan (Sept. 10), Eid al-Adha, the Muslim Feast of Sacrifice (Nov. 16) and the Hindu new year, Diwali (Nov. 5).

According to the Associated Press story on CourierPostOnline, school board president Matthew Speesler said recognizing those days has been long time coming. But some parents aren't happy. They feel students have too many days off.

The New Jersey School Board's Association said of nearly 600 school districts in the state, about 10 observe Muslim holy days, according to NJ.com.

The school's calendar can be viewed here.

...should be celebrated. However, I think that closing school for a Muslim or Hindu holiday screws up the families not celebrating those holidays (need for childcare, etc.). How about allotting floating holidays to each kid to two a year, and if the kid is out from school for that holiday, he has to bring a note from his/her parents, and the kid(s) will have to make up missed assignments. I think that this trend will become unwieldy since if you accommodate all religions with giving holidays off, then the school calendar will extend into summer.
