N.J state trooper Jason J. Hanrahan indicted for heroin possession

GAVEL_optJamal Karon Bell of Newark indicted for possession, distribution

A New Jersey state trooper and a Newark man were indicted Tuesday on charges of heroin possession, Attorney General Anne Milgram announced.

The Newark man was also charged with distributing the heroin.

Trooper Jason J. Hanrahan, 32, of Newton and Jamal Karon Bell, 33, of Newark, were each charged with third-degree possession of heroin. Bell was also charged with distribution of heroin within 500 feet of certain public property, as well as distribution of heroin and distribution of heroin within 1,000 feet of a school property, according to state Criminal Justice Director Deborah L. Gramiccioni.

Hanrahan has been suspended without pay since Jan. 16.

The state grand jury indictment alleges that on Jan. 15, Hanrahan was in possession of less than a half-ounce of heroin. An undercover investigation determined that Bell distributed the heroin to Hanrahan within 1,000 feet of the Newark Christian School and within 500 feet of Boy's Park in Newark. Hanrahan and Bell were arrested immediately following the alleged transaction.

The State Police coordinated the investigation. Supervising Deputy Attorney General Mark Eliades presented the case to the grand jury.

Third-degree crimes carry a maximum sentence of five years in state prison and a fine of up to $15,000.

Anne Milgram wants him to get five years yet she approves Jayson Williams to do only 18 months. Let’s see addiction vs. killing a man. She's not much of a vindictive liberal with an agenda. I hope those in the ATF take notice of the real Anne.

well maybe i have it all wrong then .we have thousands of men in iraq when they come home does this give them the right to go do drugs and get away with it. im sure the state police sent him to see a doctor to go back to work at that time jason should of made it clear to them that he had ptsd .so now i have to ask you suzi all these troopers and firefighters that get the 200 award should they do wrong and get away with it .i cant understand your thinking . .oh and no u dont know me .

I am a recovering user myself and there is no excuses ever for doing drugs. While we all go thru trying times in our lives...turning to drugs especially heroine is not an excuse for mistakes we make. While what seemed to happen to this trooper is tragic it is still not a get out of jail free card for him because he is a state trooper. If anything he should know better then most that drugs are not the answer. Didn't he have to take an oath to uphold the law?? Stop making excuses for him. He is a grown man who knows right from wrong. Sounds like suzi is defending him because she is somehow related to him and you can't blame her there but she needs to realize that what he did is illegal and when you do the crime you have to do the time. I did. I just hope that if this trooper has a wife that she is clean and that if there are children involved they realize how messed up they are going to make the children. What goes around in life comes around. Just own up to your mistakes, pay the time and move on!!

Hey suzicute, he broke the law many times over. There is help for his PTSD. There are no excuses. He's done now. He'll beat his addiction in the jailhouse now. Punk over paid cop. I can say that since I'm a wayyyyy over paid firefighter.

James brown, if you know so much about Jason what have you been doing? No one seems to know or remember he had a bad accident 5 years ago in which 2 people died and it was no fault of his. Post tramatic stress is very difficult to live with and he took a leave from his job to get help in which no one else helped him.Did the State Police help him? Did any of his so called friends help him? You just throw stones. He saved a life and was awarded the valor of honor . This is not a bad apple. Lets see if it happened to you what would you do? I know who you are and you are guilty of the same thing.
