Extreme weather causing rivers to overflow

Swollen rivers in northern New Jersey have forced Hundreds of people to evacuate their homes as river banks overflow from this weekend's nasty Nor'easter that dumped at least 6 inches of rain across the state, left thousand without power. The accompanying winds were so strong, SUVs were blown off the roads.
Shelters in Somerset County opened after a state of emergency was declared with the rising of the Raritan River.
Many Bound Brook residents were aware they lived in a flood prone area, but since it had yet to flood and hadn't rained much up to that point, many went to bed Saturday night unconcerned. Much to their surprise, they awoke Sunday morning to find that the Raritan River had risen to 35 feet, inundating their borough and basements with water forcing them to evacuate to a makeshift shelter in a local high school gymnasium.
In Teaneck, two men were killed this weekend by a fallen tree as they left a prayer service at the Sephardic Congregation of Teaneck building. The oak tree took power lines down with it rendering emergency responders helpless to assist the injured men until the downed power lines could be removed.
Ovadia Mussaffi, 49 and Lawrence Krause, 54, were driving at the height of the Nor'easter storm, which soaked the area with strong wind gusts and torrential rains. Krause was managing partner of Krause & Associates, a personal injury law firm based out of Manhattan and Mussafi was the president of the Sephardic Congregation.
Middlesex and Bergen County officials ordered the evacuation of their residents along with a boil notice for the water after minor flooding at water treatment plants. Residents have been asked to boil their water for one minute for drinking, cooking or taking medication, brushing teeth, mixing baby formula, feeding pets and all other consumption.
The advisory, extended through Tuesday evening, is in effect for the following towns of Middlesex County:
South Amboy, Metuchen, Woodbridge, Carteret and parts of Edison and South Plainfield.
Areas serviced by the Middlesex Water Company have been included in the advisory:
Perth Amboy, Sayerville, East Brunswick, Marlboro, Old Bridge, Rahway and Highland Park.
