N.J. Transit train kills Elmwood Park man

njtransit122809_optAn Elmwood Park man was killed Wednesday morning by a southbound NJ Transit train near the Paterson Avenue and Central Avenue crossing in Wallington.

The victim, Christopher C. Connelly, 41, was pronounced dead at the scene, said Dan Stessel, a spokesman for the transit agency.

The Bergen County line train was Hoboken bound when the accident occurred around 11:15 a.m. Stessal said that the train's engineer sounded the warning horn and applied the breaks when he saw Connelly on the tracks, but was unable to stop the train in time. None of the 89 passengers aboard were injured and the incident remains under investigation, according to the Daily Record.

Stessel said it's not yet known why the man was on the tracks.
