Legislation that does away with the requirement of mailing sample ballots to inactive voters was signed into law Friday by Gov. Jon Corzine.
The new law was sponsored by Assemblywoman Caroline Casagrande (R-Monmouth) and takes effect immediately.
The law provides that when a mailed sample ballot is returned to a county commissioner of registration and the addressee has not returned a subsequent notice from the commissioner confirming the voter's current place of residence, then a sample ballot will no longer be mailed.
"The new law is a common sense way to save taxpayers an expense that continues to escalate," Casagrande said. "The cost savings that can be realized are in excess of $1.2 million annually. That is significant."
It is estimated that nearly 320,000 inactive voters in the state receive annual confirmation notices and do not respond. Casagrande's bipartisan legislation was unanimously approved by the Assembly and received overwhelming support in the Senate."The repetitive mailing to inactive voters is costing localities a fortune," the Assemblywoman said. "The new law provides a mechanism to ensure that a voter has changed their place of residence before discontinuing the mailing. I appreciate the bipartisan support from my colleagues. These kinds of efficiencies are a benefit to everyone."
