NJEA pulls no punches: Christie budget a 'disaster' for education

keshishian012210_optBarbara Keshishian, president of the 200,000-member New Jersey Education Association, said that Gov. Chris Christie's proposed FY2011 budget is "a disaster that would begin to dismantle the best public school system in America."

"This budget is a disaster for public school children and for older students who want to further their education beyond high school," said Keshishian. "On the other hand, this budget is an unconscionable gift to those earning more than $400,000 a year. Gov. Christie is slashing education in order to pay for tax breaks for the wealthy.

"According to published reports, not only is the governor cutting nearly $1.5 billion from state education aid this year and next, but he also wants to put a stranglehold on future education spending at the state and local levels," Keshishian added, referring to proposed constitutional amendments capping state and local government spending growth at 2.5 percent per year.

"At a time when the state is facing record unemployment, he wants to lay off thousands of teachers, school employees, and college faculty and staff - adding to the problem. And at a time when education and retraining are the only hope for countless displaced workers, Gov. Christie is slamming the door of opportunity in their faces by cutting aid to our county colleges.

"What happened to his vow to cut waste, fraud, and corruption? He's gutting spending on public education, enriching the wealthy, and we're still waiting for him to address the corruption that plagues this state," Keshishian said.

"During the campaign, Chris Christie told teachers and school employees he would ‘make education a top priority.' Tomorrow, he is going to begin dismantling the best public school system in America. We will work for as long as it takes to help this governor get his priorities straight," said Keshishian.

Reinstituting the Millionaire's Tax would cover the these budget cuts to education. But, that will never happen as long as this guy sits in the Gov. seat. This Gov is for the upper class for sure. In a state with a majority of midddle class voters, how did this guy get in office. He had privledge written all over his face. Christie would care about public education, why would he, he sends his kids to privite school.

Show me please the 'wasteful spending' of $2.5 mill in Summit, NJ???? I just don't see it!!! Yes, I do agree that there are programs that could be cut, but they aren't in the education department. They is way more wasteful spending in other departments. Let the kids have their quality education. They are our future. All Christie is accomplishing with this is that the rich kids - who are already attending private schools - are going to be the only ones attending colleges in the future. He was always a representative of the upper class and he'll never change. And all you who voted for him see the real Christie now.

The NJEA has bullied every legislator in this state for years. Demanding more and more from state government, while hyjacking local boards of education, to ensure its' insatiable lust for property tax dollars to enrich their ilk. Enough with this union already, neuter it! There are a lot of very, very dedicated teachers out there, more than willing to workout a fair compensation and health benefits package. But this union will not hear any of it! They are selfish, arrogant, manipulating wenches. Mark my words, as this battle continues, you'lll see the NJEA instructing teachers to make life for their students "more difficult"; telling educators do only what is absolutely required and nothing more. In essence, they will hold these kids future hostage. Their cries it's "for the children" is a scam. . . .IT'S FOR THE UNION and ALL OTHERS BE DAMNED.

This database holds records for all state employees payroll information including school districts administrative staff.

Go ahead and look up your county. LOOK at how many unnecessary administrative staff members you're paying for with your property taxes not only in your district, but in the "Abbott" school districts that use pooled money from tax payers who don't even live in those districts!

Idiot
How about coming up with a fact or two if you're going to accuse districts of wasteful spending. It's probably there, but saying VP of Pencil Sharpening only negates your argument

Christie is only cutting funding to get districts to eliminate wasteful positions. The only people who can lay off teachers are the districts, if they're not willing to cut out their own pork and lay off the Associate Vice Superintendent of Pencil Sharpening.
