The New Jersey Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals has just hired their first “forensic veterinarian.” Dr. Ernest Rogers, of the Maplewood Animal Hospital, will be joining their law enforcement division.
The general public is becoming increasingly aware of animal abuse due to media coverage of high profile abuse cases, and shows like "Animal Cops" on Animal Planet. The NJSPCA said Rogers is bringing years of experience to the job, according to CBS New York.
According to springfieldavenue.com, Rogers said, “The need to identify and arrest individuals who hurt animals, cannot be understated. I am proud to be a member of this team of humane police officers and glad to be of service in solving crimes against animals in New Jersey.”
Rogers has many years of police consultation, involvement in prosecutions, medical examinations, investigation of animal remains, evidence collection, providing expert witness reports and court testimony to his record.
New Jersey’s Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals is the second oldest SPCA in the U.S. It was created in 1868. The organization operates with no state resources or funding, and thrives on public contributions and revenue coming from enforcement actions.
The NJSPCA asks anyone who may have witnessed animal abuse in New Jersey to please call 800-582-5979, or fill out a form on the SPCA website, including name and phone number.
