Here's the latest score when it comes to the gubernatorial candidates collecting endorsements from New Jersey's daily newspapers.
Corzine 3, Christie 2, and Daggett 1.
Over the weekend, Democratic Gov. Jon Corzine was endorsed by The New York Times, the Philadelphia Inquirer and El Diario Le Prensa, the Hispanic daily, while Republican challenger Chris Christie garnered the backing of the Home News Tribune of East Brunswick and the Courier-News of Bridgewater. Daggett gained the endorsement of The Star-Ledger of Newark on Oct. 11.
In a Saturday editorial, The Times described Corzine as "a decent man with a laudable set of goals for "his state.''The Inquirer stated Corzine's "record shows a capacity to go against the state's traditional politics and improve its government.''
Referring to Christie, The Inquirer stated, "Over the better part of a year of campaigning, he gave the public astonishingly few reasons to vote for him. By dodging fundamental policy questions, he asked to be exempted from the basic rules of seeking public office."
The Home News Tribune and Courier-News, two of the Gannett chain's six New Jersey daily newspaper's see the candidates in another light.
"But if voters genuinely want to change the reckless, unethical culture of Trenton, Daggett's not the way to go,'' the Christie endorsement declared. "And another four years of Corzine certainly won't do it. Chris Christie should be the clear choice as the only candidate exhibiting the courage to meaningfully talk about what the state can't afford.''
With two weekends remaining before the Nov. 3 election, as many as 15 daily newspapers with a New Jersey readership have yet to endorse a candidate.
