President Obama on Monday nominated federal Magistrate Judge Michael A. Shipp to serve on the U.S. District Court in New Jersey.
Shipp has been a magistrate judge sitting in Newark since 2007.
“I am proud to nominate this outstanding candidate to serve on the United States District Court bench,” Obama said.
“Judge Shipp has a long and distinguished record of service, and I am confident he will serve on the federal bench with distinction.”
Prior to his appointment to the bench, Shipp spent four years with the state attorney general’s office, first as assistant attorney
general in-charge-of consumer protection and later as counsel to the attorney general. From 1995 to 2003, Shipp was an associate at the Newark law firm of Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom. He began his legal career as a law clerk for then-state Supreme Court Justice James H. Coleman from 1994 to 1995. Shipp received his law degree from Seton Hall University School of Law in 1994 and his bachelor’s degree in 1987 from Rutgers University.
