A Union City fire left six firefighters injured and destroyed two apartment buildings, including vehicles parked in a nearby garage before fire officials were able to contain the blaze around 1:30 p.m. Sunday.

Thick, black smoke from the mid-morning blaze could be seen for miles. Fire officials evacuated from the three-story buildings on Palisades Avenue, which has officials baffled as to what ignited the blaze.

Some witnesses say a barbecue may have been the cause; others speculated a vehicle parked on the street might have exploded, setting other cars nearby afire.

Union County mayor Brian Stack said witnesses reported hearing several "booms" just before the fire began spreading, which turned out to be vehicles exploding

The exact cause of the blaze, which was still smoldering hours after the fire department extinguished it, is under investigation. The American Red Cross and other agencies were on scene helping displaced tenants.
