Taking train to plane at Newark promoted on NJ Transit

Travelers who take the train to Newark Liberty International Airport will be able to take advantage of promotions, including continued fare reductions, through the end of the year.

NJ Transit and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey have announced the promotional effort, including a downloadable guide for travel agents and an online rail trip planner for air travelers.

The steps include an extension of NJ Transit's Family SuperSaver fare, which enables two children age 11 and under to travel free with each adult, from now through Jan. 2, 2011.

"We want air travelers to know how convenient and affordable it can be to take NJ Transit rail service to the airport," said James Weinstein, the transit agency's executive director.

According to Weinstein, NJ Transit also is in discussions with Continental Airlines, Newark's leading carrier, about ways to improve travelers' experiences at the facility, which has not been highly rated in travel surveys.

Meanwhile, customers traveling between the airport station and New York Penn Station, a roughly 25-minute trip, will see fares reduced to $12.50 each way. According to NJ Transit statistics, most users of the airport station begin or end their rail trips at the New York hub.

"This partnership helps our entire region," said Bill Baroni, port authority deputy executive director. "Simply put, we are providing a faster, cheaper, easier way to fly."

Among the other components of the campaign:

  • New Web Portal for NJ TRANSIT Airport Travelers: A redesigned page at njtransit.com/EWR makes taking the train to the plane easier than ever. Check schedules and fares, get real-time train information, view a virtual tour of the AirTrain experience and get important travel tips for air travelers.
  • Downloadable Guide for Travel Agents: Beginning next week, travel agents around the globe will be able to download a simple guide explaining how easy it is to use NJ Transit service to or from EWR.
