U.S. Dept. of Energy provides nearly $1 million for new Hackensack weatherization training center

usdoe_optThe Bergen County Community Action Partnership has been selected to receive $999,846 in federal to expand weatherization training programs and establish a new weatherization training center in Hackensack, the U.S. Department of energy announced Friday.

The award is one of 34 projects in 27 states that have been selected to receive $29 million in federal aid. The projects are designed to provide green job training for workers in energy efficiency retrofitting and weatherization services.

"A well-trained workforce will be a crucial part of America's clean energy economy in the years ahead," Deputy Secretary of Energy Daniel Poneman said. "These investments in efficiency training programs will help build a foundation for long-term growth in America. Energy efficiency improves the competitiveness of our economy, benefits the environment, and puts Americans back to work."

The $1.3 million cost-shared project in Hackensack will develop a weatherization training center that would offer a full range of courses for weatherization workers. Courses would cover weatherization testing and techniques. Students will participate in classroom, laboratory, and hands-on training to learn how to properly identify and correct residential energy use problems.

Under the federal Recovery Act, the Obama Administration is making investments that are attempting to help build America's clean energy future, including $5 billion to significantly ramp up the pace of weatherization in the United States.
