It became known as "Lindsay's Blizzard."

On Feb. 9, 1969, meteorologists called for a chance of snow for the New York area. Instead, a major snow storm struck, dumping 15 to 20 inches on New York City and New Jersey. New York Mayor John Lindsay, who was seen as a Republican destined for higher office, found himself not only in knee-deep snow but in a political firestorm.

Queens was cut off from New York's other four boroughs. Side streets in Queens, Brooklyn, the Bronx and Staten Island went unplowed. The storm claimed 42 lives in New York, half of them in Queens.

When Lindsay took a walking tour of trouble areas, New Yorkers gathered in groups to throw snowballs and boo him. The mayor was defeated in the following mayoral election and disappeared from politics.

If New Jersey and national Democrats have their way, the snowstorm that brought New Jersey to its knees on Sunday and Monday will become known as "Christie's Blizzard."

As the blizzard headed north up the East Coast Sunday, Republican Gov. Chris Christie flew south with his family for a week-long vacation at Disney World in Orlando.

The State Police, the state Department of Transportation and Acting Gov. Stephen M. Sweeney (D-Gloucester) were left to guide the state government's response to the storm, which dumped as much as 30 inches of snow on sections of New Jersey and brought mass transit to a stop.

In the past week, New Jersey and national media outlets and Democrats have heavily criticized Christie and Lt. Gov. Kim Guadagno, who has also been out of state, for not being present to respond to the storm.

Now, a liberal Washington, D.C., political group has begun an online campaign criticizing the governor.

A "Where in the World is Gov. Chris Christie" website created by the Progressive Change Campaign Committee features images of the governor altered to make him look like Waldo, the main character in the children's book series "Where's Waldo?" The organization has purchased online advertising that features a doctored photo of Christie in a cartoon red-and-white winter cap.

The site lists several of Christie's out-of-state trips, from the current Florida vacation to Florida to campaigning for Republican candidates across the nation during in the autumn.

The Progressive Change Campaign Committee is a political action group directed by Adam Green, who was previously the communications director for the New Jersey Democratic Party. The organization has 19,000 members in New Jersey.

This guy is nasty and does not deserve respect. This is something you can expect from a Republican.

Christie is like Palin.

Only be govenor when one wants to be (ie. when it is convenient).

I thought government officials understood they had to frequently sacrifice time with family when circumstances in their political arena called for immediate action and personal involvement.

What is really disgusting is that he could not even take time to coordinate coverage for the state through the Lt. Governor whose position was newly created with the help of a push from Christie.

This was a planned failure, like all the other planned failures (Race to the Top & Charter grant applications, etc.). The idea is to get the people so fed up with government, that they would go along willingly with just about any hare-brained scheme to dismantle it. The self-reliance ethos of the conservatives is about to be put to the ultimate test: People will be expected to particpate in a pay-as-you-go plan if they want to have their street plowed, or they can do it themselves. As others have suggested below, we will soon be expected to take care of our own security (replace cops with private security patrols in our neighborhoods, paid for by us); medical care (all costs for EMT response to be paid for upon arrival - even if you are currently comatose) including learning how to use a defibrillator on yourself if you are experiencing a heart attack; fire protection (already being instituted in several municipalities); etc.

And you can forget about any type of consumer protections in this Brave New World...entrepreneurship will be promoted so heavily, that the tow truck drivers who yanked all these cars off the highway will not only be allowed to charge $700 per pop (as they are); they will be honored as great business innovators for doing so...a business model to be emulated by every other business.

Notice also how Steve Sweeney completely kept himself in check as agreed between him, South Jersey Dem Boss Norcross, DiVincenzo, and Christie's people. He didn't have a harsh word for either Christie or Birdguano for leaving him in this predicament. Can you imagine what these hypocrites would do if anyone under them left a State Agency in charge of some underling like they did? Two people at the top ANYWHERE are NEVER allowed to leave at the same time like this. Maybe they should give themselves the same discipline they would have given to anyone under them for doing the same thing. Or maybe we have learned how utterly useless they really are, and they should just stay away - permanently.

I can see it now: Wife and kiddies off to the Magic Kingdom while hubby stays in the luxury of his room at the hotel, biting his nails, pacing the floor, waiting for the clock to mark another hour when he can call home to see "how're things goin"... Yeah....comforting.
And, when you are the Gov, when you have more money than god, you can afford to buy a new one-way ticket home, leaving wifey and kiddies to enjoy their vacation while you roll up your shirt sleeves and actually DO something during a crisis.

Oh, wait. Silly me...I forgot. He doesn't actually WANT to do anything. He just likes the title. Sorta like Bush.

I find it strange that Christie and his family returned from Florida this morning and he jumped right to applying to the federal government for money to aid in the snow clean up. However, when he had weeks to apply to the government for the school aid, he waited and waited, and we all know what happened to the Race to the Top funds. Then he had another chance, again with several weeks to apply, and again did not come through on time. Hmmmm Just what are his priorities?

BOTH KNUCKLEHEADS

AFTER BUSH FAILED TO TAKE CHARGE AND APPEAR AFTER KATRINA, ONE WOULD HAVE THOUGHT THAT EVERY POLITICIAN IN THE LAND GOT THE MESSAGE. NOPE! GUESS CHRISTIE, THE DOPE, COULDN'T BE BOTHERED. HE MIGHT EVEN GET HIMSELF IMPEACHED. IT'S HIS JOB TO BE HERE IN NJ DURING PERIODS OF DIFFICULTY. HE WAS BASKING IN THE SUN AT "DISNEY WORLD".

THE KNUCKLEHEAD COULDN'T GET HIMSELF ELECTED DOGCATCHER IN ANY OF NJ'S COMMUNITIES TODAY.

History in the making as this is the first Governor Mouseketeer. Chris got the wealther report and quickly packed up his belongings and left to his real home. The World of politics was fun and very profitable when Chris worked with Karl Rove but being Governor is to much work. Just as long as the pay checks keep getting direct deposit and the bribes keep coming in Chris really could care less of about citizens of New Jersey. He made that point when he lost billion of dollars for education and refused the money for jobs. He took pride in running and winning on the statement no more taxes while knowing he couldn't care about the voters it was the title and the free spending he wanted. The crooks put him in office and the citizens will be the ones to pay the price for that mistake. Chris is getting a good laugh at how easy it was to fool the voters and now he's spending as much as possible while citizens suffer. Funny Obama campaigned with Corzin and say he would make sure New Jersey got help during the Recession but the voters wanted a corrupt Mob wannabee even knowing the corruption Chris had already done. Nice to see even the Deputy Governor skipped out leaving the third in command to run the State. Property taxes will go up and voters will see how they got duped by Chris as he laughs all the way to the bank.
