You see it all the time.
Whether it's on "Desperate Housewives," the "Real Housewives of (you insert the name of the city)," and reality TV or on the faces of aging celebrities, the pressure of maintaining that oh, so youthful look just to "keep up appearances" has become a growing trend among women today, with more and more younger women looking for that eternal fountain of youth.
But how young is considered too young?
For one British mother, it’s never too early to begin prepping for alterations on her 7-year-old daughter.
51-year-old Sarah Burge, who is known throughout England as the “Human Barbie”, mainly due to all the plastic surgeries she’s had to mirror that popular iconic doll-look, decided to give her prepubescent daughter a Christmas gift of physical reconstruction.
According to RadarOnline, Burge gave her grade school daughter Poppy, a gift certificate worth more than $10,900 in plastic surgeries as a holiday stocking stuffer.
"I put the voucher in her stocking, there's nothing wrong with that," the MailOnline.com reported the mother as saying, noting that Poppy "asks for surgery all the time.”, and went on to defend her gift adding, “She wants to look good and lipo is one of those procedures that will always come in handy."
She then compared the investment to "saving money for her education."
And that’s not it. When Poppy turns Sweet 16, Burge plans to give her daughter breast augmentation.
Burge says her child was overjoyed when she received the voucher telling the MailOnline Poppy exclaimed, “It was a dream come true, all my friends were jealous. I can't wait to be like Mummy with big boobs, they're pretty."
The Brit has acknowledged that "some people think it's controversial, and I get angry when strangers say I'm a bad mother, because I don't think there's any harm in giving her this gift.”
Justifying her actions further, the mother added, “Looks are a big part of how our futures pan out, there shouldn't be a stigma around wanting to look good."
Hollywood is notorious for being brutal on women’s appearances and the pressure to compete among young starlets has brought many Beverly Hills plastic surgeons good fortune.
However, some actresses do resist the pressure and strong criticism.
“Glee” Actress and Singer Lea Michelle says she was told numerous times to fix her nose, but she refused.
In the September issue of Harper’s Bazaar, the actress recounts crude comments she received while pursuing showbiz, telling the magazine, "How many managers told me,‘ Get a nose job. You’re not pretty enough’? But I proved them wrong," adding “I’m 5-foot-3. I don’t look like a lot of other people, you know what I mean? I look like I’m 12.”
Yet there are those young women who look young and succumb to the knife anyway.
Plastic Surgery Queen Heidi Montage underwent 10 plastic surgery procedures in one day in 2009 and is now experiencing regret.
“The Hills” reality star says she is now having serious regrets about her reconstructed body.
