Do you long for the warmth and communal ambiance of your local farmer's market as the winter's cold, sleet and snow pummel the Garden State? Yes, we have wonderful markets with great produce sections — for example, Wegman's and Whole Foods — but how fresh is fresh, as the produce certainly is not coming from New Jersey from January until April or May.
Taking a tour of Local Harvest, here are some year-round farmers' markets offering up fresh green veggies, eggs, honey, fruits and herbs.
In Howell: Iceberg Farms sells chicken and quail eggs, winter squash, honey and maple syrup; Shangri La Farm is a sustainable farm selling fresh chickens, eggs, grains and seeds.
Terhune Orchards in Princeton is open year round, seven days a week, with a store stocked with fresh fruit, organic vegetables, fresh herbs and plants, as well as apple cider and fruit breads.
The Cook Student Organic Farm managed by Rutgers University students is an organic farm operating year round. In winter, you will find fresh arugula, carrots, beets, Chinese greens, peppers, lettuce, Swiss chard and spinach.
The Trenton Farmers' Market is open year round selling Jersey Fresh fruits and vegetables from local farms, as well as ocean fresh seafood and live crabs at the Crab Shack.
In West Amwell, Podere Di Melo specializes in food of the Italian and French countryside, offering European vegetables, honey, and a variety of meats including gourmet poultry, duck, lamb, guinea fowl and heritage pork.
Heading to southern NJ, Running Bug Farm, "Better Than Organic" calls itself a "hobby farmette" offering free range organic eggs, Angora wool, organic personal care items, organic seeds and organic pet food.
P&L Holdings LLC in Bordentown operates a 10,000 sq. ft. greenhouse facility devoted to the best naturally grown produce, specializing in gourmet produce ~ e.g. tomatoes, basil, peppers, eggplant and zucchini.
