New Jersey is well-known for its vine-ripened “Jersey Tomato” and their delicious taste. The Rutgers New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station “Rediscovering the Jersey Tomato” project is on a quest to learn what makes the “Jersey Tomato” tangy, tasty and pop in your mouth. Here is your chance to discover delicious flavors like the Rutgers, Ramapo, Moreton and many more unique types of tomato.
The 20th Annual Great Tomato Tasting will be held on Sept. 1 at the Rutgers Snyder Research & Extension Farm in Hunterdon County, from 3 p.m. to dusk. The event will showcase top seeds like heirloom and hybrid tomatoes. Sweet peppers, cucumbers, herbs, apples and peaches will also be available for sampling.
With 90 different varieties of tomato cultivated at Snyder Farm an abundance of tomatoes will be ready for eating. You can sink your teeth into Beefsteak/Extra Large, Cherry, Grape, Plum and Round/Medium tomatoes. Visitors can try tomatoes paired with basil — a perfect combination of flavors. Enjoy tomatoes right off the vine and let the Rutgers research team know what you like about the “Jersey Tomato.”The Great Tomato Tasting is an opportunity to savor tomatoes and learn about New Jersey agriculture. Rutgers professors and agricultural experts will be on hand to impart their knowledge. The afternoon will also include 4-H demonstrations and interpretive performances. Attendees can tour the farm and unearth what's growing in the Garden State.
