New Holiday trend: Gather at an all-inclusive resort

For those who enjoy the traditional American holiday, the following all-inclusive resorts provide a winter getaway — minus the work.

Vista Verde Ranch, Colorado

This picturesque Colorado ranch could double as the subject of a Norman Rockwell painting, complete with plenty of snow and sleigh-riding carolers. Special holiday events include decoration making, tree cutting and a Christmas Day feast fit for a king. Those staying over the New Year's holiday can participate in the resort's traditional New Year's progressive dinner. It begins during the afternoon of New Year's Eve and takes guests via skis or sleigh from one resort location to another with different courses served along the way. Everyone ends up at Sweetheart's Parlor for desert and to watch the ball drop in Times Square in New York.

The Balsams Resort, New Hampshire

A snow lover's paradise, this all-inclusive winter wonderland resort features Alpine and Nordic skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing, ice skating, snowmobiling and dog sledding. Holiday festivities include gingerbread decorating, ornament making, caroling, dancing and wine tasting. Christmas Eve includes a special reading of T'was the Night Before Christmas, along with a traditional Christmas Day brunch. The New Year's Eve celebration includes fireworks, grand dinner buffet and ballroom dancing. Guests also can take a cozy sleigh ride through the grounds of the 15,000-acre mountain resort.

Deerhurst Resort, Ontario, Canada

Guests can enjoy an idyllic late autumn setting for a no-stress Canadian Thanksgiving at this all-inclusive resort in Ontario. The holiday can include a round of golf, boat tour, horseback riding, hiking or mountain biking. When colder weather moves in around the December holidays, the grounds turn into a winter wonderland. The resort is well known for its downhill and cross country skiing, as well as 2,000 km of snowmobiling trails. Other winter sports include outdoor ice skating, hockey, dog sledding and snow-tubing.

For those who enjoy both the sun and snow, put the following getaway on the wish list:

Kona Village Resort, Hawaii

This beautiful all-inclusive resort, located on the island of Hawaii, hosts a special Christmas at Kona Village gala during December. The annual holiday culinary celebration, held in early December, features cuisine prepared by the island's top chefs. As an added bonus, nearby Mauna Kea (White Mountain), a colossal extinct volcano, is one of the world's highest mountains with some of the finest snow anywhere. With 100 square miles of snowy terrain, where else can one ski down a mountain and snorkel over a coral reef in the same day?

How about an all inclusive that also has something for mom, kids and dad at www.spamexico.com for less than $150 a day.
