Two accidents occurred on March 6 around 8:30 a.m. on a sunny but cold Saturday at the corner of River Road and New Bridge Road in Teaneck. It appeared that snowbanks below the curb had been spread into the street by cars, melted, and refrozen, casting a thin sheet of virtually invisible ice over the street.
A Bergenfield resident lost control of her car on the curve, and it slid up the embankment on River Road, where it was stopped by a tree. She was not injured, and her car sustained no damage except for a cracked bumper. While she was trying to call 911, two cars passing by collided as their drivers tried to brake on the icy street. The right front end of a New Milford woman's car was damaged, but she was unhurt. Another New Milford woman, a passenger in the front car, was transported to Holy Name Hospital due to neck pain.
Teaneck police attributed both accidents to icy conditions and assigned no fault to the drivers. The officers summoned an ambulance for the injured woman, tow trucks to remove the cars, and a town vehicle to spread salt over the icy road.
