Since the death of heiress Doris Duke in 1993, the Duke Foundation has been developing a strategy to preserve her legacy, which includes donation of funds and property to be used for conservation and environmental education.
The showpiece of the Duke Foundation's holdings is the 2,700-acre Duke Farms estate in Somerset County's Hillsborough Township, just south of Somerville. Undoubtedly one of the most valuable tracts of undeveloped land in New Jersey, the estate is gradually being opened to public use for the goals described by Duke in her will.
The foundation has announced guided bus and bicycle tours through the 700-acre core of the property, featuring lakes, waterfalls and historic buildings.
Bus tours will be held at 11 a. m., 12:30 p.m. and 2 p.m. on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, with private tours available for groups of 20 or more.
The bike tours — bring your own mountain bikes and helmets — will be held from 8 to 10 a.m. Saturdays.
