First 100 kids to pre-register by June 22 will get a free bicycle and helmet
The rodeo is coming to Newark. But there won't be any bucking broncos, cowboys, or lassos.
Newark is gearing up for a bike rodeo ... and 100 bicycles will be given away.
The city is partnering with the New Jersey Trauma Center at UMDNJ-The University Hospital to hold a Bike Rodeo at the Boylan Recreation Center, on Saturday, July 11, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Boylan Center is located at 916 South Orange Avenue in the West Ward.
The event is free and open to Newark residents, and the first 100 children who pre-register by the June 22 deadline will receive a free bicycle and helmet. No one who registers beyond the deadline is eligible for the bike and helmet.The Bike Rodeo will teach Newark youngsters aged 7-12 safe bicycle-riding skills, including the proper use of a bike helmet, and demonstrate the importance of wearing bike helmets and safety gear when riding.
"Bicycle riding is a wonderful pastime that can be enjoyed by all ages. When our children learn how to ride bikes, it is important that they also learn safe riding practices," Newark Mayor Cory Booker said. "I commend the sponsors of this event for supporting the city's efforts to keep our children safe and healthy."
"One of our goals at the New Jersey Trauma Center is to provide safety education to the children of Newark. This event is a great opportunity for our youth and their families to enjoy a fun-filled program and receive free bicycles and helmets, while learning how to be safe," said Iesha Suber, Injury Prevention and Outreach Coordinator at the New Jersey Trauma Center.
