A Randolph woman has filed suit against a psychic, claiming she was hoodwinked by the latter to the tune of $160,000 and deceived into believing she would die without her help.
Karen Brown has accused her former psychic Paula Lee, also known as Pauline Lee, of taking her cash, borrowing her credit card to buy jewelry, and exploiting her depression, according to Brown's attorney Neil C. Crowley.
"My client was preyed upon by this person with her superstitious tales and scary warnings," Crowley said.
The suit states that Brown sought the services of Lee beginning in December 2004, after seeing a sign for Lee's business advertising help in marriage and relationships.
The suit also states that Brown was convinced that Lee "had genuine psychic abilities, powers and the ability to influence future events." Lee claimed she could communicate with departed souls and convinced Brown she was under a curse, the suit also states.
Lee, allegedly, also claimed that without her intervention, Brown's health would have suffered greatly, the suit says. Among other allegations: Lee convinced Brown to loan her money and let her use her credit card to buy jewelry and other expensive items, and got her to co-sign a loan for a Chevrolet Suburban vehicle.
Brown has been refunded $19,000 of the $160,000 she believes she is owed, but alleges she received an e-mail from someone on behalf of Lee warning Brown that she might die if the psychic returned the money because she would stop her "ministrations," the lawsuit said.
Lee could not be reached for comment and her Web site apparently is no longer working, Crowley said in a published report.
