The Hermitage Museum, a historic house and educational center, will host its annual Civil War Winter Camp event on Saturday and Sunday, January 16 and 17, from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. on the museum grounds at 335 North Franklin Turnpike in Ho-Ho-Kus, N.J. The popular encampment features Company B, 2nd Rhode Island Volunteers, a Civil War re-enacting group based in Clifton.
Members of the group outfit themselves with faithful reproductions of Civil War-era uniforms and equipment. They will set up an outdoor field encampment, complete with campfire, to portray how the soldiers survived the harsh winter conditions during the war. Admission to the event includes a tour of The Hermitage, a National Historic Landmark, which is still adorned with elegant holiday decorations.
The Civil War Winter Camp is open to the public. Admission is free to museum members and $5 for non-members. Children ages 6 and under are admitteed free. For information about membership to The Hermitage, or for a schedule of its educational and cultural programs offered throughout the year, call Executive Director Richard Sgritta at (201) 445-8311, ext. 22 or visit www.thehermitage.org.
