Annual performances of Eve Ensler’s “The Vagina Monologues” have done a great deal to increase understanding about sexual violence against women; similarly, annual performances of “Unnatural Acts” might further understanding about the struggle for gay rights.
Yes, many heterosexual Americans have made progress accepting and embracing gays and lesbians. But we can always become more empathetic. We can advocate legalizing same-sex marriage in New Jersey and holding our state representatives accountable if they do not support it. We can work with gay and lesbian advocates to repeal the Defense of Marriage Act, and we can speak up about “Unnatural Acts,” which I had to cross the river to see, but look forward to the time when there is a production in my own backyard.
