Measures Assemblyman Jack Conners sponsored to benefit New Jersey military personnel in combat and to help families of New Jersey Army and Air National Guard service members who have been mobilized were released today by an Assembly panel.

“The service of our military personnel who risk their lives and safety protecting our country in war, conflict and combat is priceless,” said Conners (D-Burlington/Camden), the panel’s chairman.

“We have a responsibility to show appreciation for their ongoing sacrifice.”

One bill (A-1952)  would exempt pay earned by New Jersey military personnel serving in combat zones from the state income tax. According to the state Treasury Department, about 5,500 New Jerseyans receive combat-related pay.

It was released by the Assembly Military and Veterans’ Affairs Committee and goes to the Assembly Appropriations Committee for more consideration.

The other (A-2598) authorizes a special license plate with proceeds to be distributed to the New Jersey National Guard Family Programs’ Family Grant Program. The program is used by families of New Jersey Army and Air National Guard service members who have been mobilized for more than 90 days and are experiencing financial hardship.

The legislation was also released by the Assembly Military and Veterans’ Affairs Committee. It now heads to the Assembly Transportation, Public Works and Independent Authorities Committee for further consideration.
