Menswear designer Si Chan has introduced a new winter look: the Hug Me Jacket. It’s a green winter parka that fastens – not with the traditional zipper – but with five sets of hands. The hands are made from the same fabric as the jacket, and they appear to be clasping you at intervals all down your front.
Does it come with pants?
Mr. Chan said the vision for the jacket was hugging hands that express love. On his blog he has a darling photo of himself as a toddler getting a hug from his big brother, which may have given him the idea in the first place. Fashion comes up with a lot of crazy stuff, but at least this idea seems to have a sweet and caring inspiration.
Do the Hugs go with Uggs?
Clothing has always been a key part of self-expression, and this jacket gives me some ideas for several fashion-forward items that would fit in well this fall:
- Purses that are tiny and have no visible openings.
- Belts with notches that go all the way around – you can just keep tightening them!
- A shirt that doesn’t have a back – you gave it to someone who needed it.
And as long as we’re accessorizing with hands, I’d like to see a scarf that uses a hand to reach up and cover the person’s mouth. Let’s get one for each member of Congress.
So far the Hug Me Jacket is still in prototype phase, but is expected to retail for around $1200. That seems kind of steep. The fashion industry may embrace this style, but the general public will find it out of hand.
