Betraying free public education & democracy

The idea of free public education is a fundamental tenet of democracy because a nation cannot be ignorant and free, to paraphrase Thomas Jefferson. As his parting blow to legions of Garden State children, Jon Corzine is laying a foundation for the erosion of free schools. There is already too much support for diverting public money to private hands, and like prisons and health care, our schools are not an appropriate vehicle for profiteering. Ronald Reagan was wrong when he said government is the problem. In many cases, the problem is simply greed or incompetence. Before we wreck our schools, we should learn to solve the real problems and leave the rhetoric behind.
