My prediction

The league must have a reasonably strong NY-are representative to get where it wants to go in the US marketplace. Sooner or later, the league will get tired of being irrelevant in this market, and will "give in" to one extent or another to the desires of the team to spend more money. They won't go as far as the NASL did with the Cosmos, but they will give the Red Bulls a few degrees of freedom. At that point, the Red Bulls can draw. One might think they wouldn't because of historical legacy, until one remembers that the Cosmos themselves drew very badly until they started signing expensive, famous players and winning.
