Religious holidays....

...should be celebrated. However, I think that closing school for a Muslim or Hindu holiday screws up the families not celebrating those holidays (need for childcare, etc.). How about allotting floating holidays to each kid to two a year, and if the kid is out from school for that holiday, he has to bring a note from his/her parents, and the kid(s) will have to make up missed assignments. I think that this trend will become unwieldy since if you accommodate all religions with giving holidays off, then the school calendar will extend into summer.

What's so bad about extending the school year? It would allow teachers to work more, and it would allow for parents to spend less on child care. Year-round school years aren't so bad. Keeps your brain fresh.
