This is bad news for public transit in NJ

Anyone who was a Bush or Pataki appointee can readily be considered as incapable of giving public transit the prominence, respect, and budget it deserves in a Western nation. The two appointees are lackluster bureaucrats who were picked by Bush and Pataki for their lack of imagination and for sharing the Republican belief that public transit is the devil.

So the fact that someone gained office under a Republican rates them as "bad news for public transit in NJ"? Simpson just doesn't fit that bill. Simpson was one of the true bi-partisan managers that ever hit Washington (ask his staff and the legislators that interacted with him) and at FTA funded light rail throughout the U.S. He was a modern day "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington".

However, he did kill rail projects that were stuffed with pork and doomed to both never be profitable nor perform with both transit and economic efficiency. The idea is to create public transport that is sustainable.

New Jersey is broke and desperately needing managers who ARE NOT CORRUPT and that have practical balance sheet accountability couched with integrity and experience. Put that together with his transportation background and we should thank our stars that Christie was able to convinced him to take a thankless job at our time of need. Maybe we'll quit wasting money (if Corzine didn't burn through what was left in his last days in office) and actually have our tax dollars create mass transit that really works for the prople without feathering the unions and politicians beds.
