Mitt Romney gets my vote, and why he should get yours, too

COMMENTARY

I am voting for Mitt Romney. And if you are concerned about a future with freedom, prosperity, security and fairness, so should you. Why?

The most important trait for a President to possess is leadership. The country today faces some very severe problems. The optimum solutions should benefit the majority of the people, without infringing on the basic rights of any citizen. Past Presidents have accomplished this by gathering as much information as possible from both sides of a debated issue. They would then digest the information and provide a strongly suggested solution to congress that was always consistent with the basic “what’s best for the majority” view. As governor of Massachusetts, Mitt Romney found these types of solutions while working with a legislature that was 87 percent from the opposing party. These solutions eventually served as models for others.

So how would Romney solve the most severe problems?

The economy, along with the tax policy, the resulting deficit/ debt and the fiscal cliff, is the problem that needs to be solved quickly. Some say that the prior recession was so severe that it could, as the great depression did, take up to 10 years to fully recover. That’s a bunch of poppycock. The depression lasted so long because the government used very restrictive monetary and fiscals policies. Today we know how to use an expansive economic policy to end recessions of any severity, as was shown in 1981 and 1991 and again in 2001. The last four years mark the first time in history that vastly expansive monetary and fiscal policies have failed to lead to a robust economic recovery that should have generated 400,000 to 500,000 jobs per month.

Mitt Romney understands business. He will restructure the tax code so that not only is it more fair, but it will lead to large increases in economic growth. By adding up to 12 million jobs in the next four years, tax revenue will increase quickly. This reduces the pressure to aggressively cut spending. Romney will bring down the deficit as he tries to balance the budget as quickly as possible.

The second critical problem is defense of the country and our resulting foreign policy. Mitt Romney will follow the Dwight Eisenhower/John Kennedy/Ronald Reagan model. This was known as “peace through strength.” Fearful of atomic weapons in the 1950’s, nations became very reluctant to initiate any actions against the US. In the early 1960’s Kennedy’s forceful blockade of Cuba convinced the Russians to remove their missiles. In the 1980’s President Reagan rebuilt our armed forces, which were weakened during the prior administration. He even spoke of a “star wars” like defense system where the U.S. had weapons circling the earth. If any nation fired toward the US, we would zap the missile in the air and then retaliate. While Congress scrapped the idea, it put fear into our potential enemies.

Mitt Romney will use the same model. He will make our military stronger and, although war is always the last option, it is, nonetheless an option that Romney would use. He would make sure all of our adversaries knew that.

There are other problems. The health care issue has to be resolved. Any objective view should conclude that the newly implemented health care law, while it does have some good features, is simply not right. It was passed without review and not one member of the opposing party voted for it. Regardless of the solution to the fiscal cliff problem, the new health-care taxes put in place will likely push the economy back into recession. Mitt Romney has shown that he can come up with a plan that both political parties can live with, thus avoiding a possible recession.

As we know, this election is critical for the future direction of the country. Mitt Romney’s direction is one where we emphasize individual freedom and individual responsibility, while recognizing our moral obligation to every American. It is a future where the economy is growing and providing opportunity for all. It is a future where we set an example for our children about the importance of values and the importance of learning to live responsibly. It is the future I want for my children.

???? "Mitt Romney understands business."????

I think Warren Buffet said, the business that Romney understands, is not the same as the business of running the country.

"He will make our military stronger and...."

We need diplomacy, not war.

No, Romney is an aging old man, lost in time, with no clear vision. I'll pass on the Mitt-Witt.

Well, you just convinced me to vote for Romney, too. Do you suppose he'll use the Herbert Hoover model also, since that worked so well?

Thank You
Thank you for taking a stand for honesty in New Jersey. I wish all voters would educate themselves like you have instead of relying upon biased news outlets. I've looked into both men and I've found Mitt Romney to be a great man and uniquely gifted to lead us out of this financial mess. Obama is likewise a great man, but lacks the abilities we need in the President.

I must say this just goes to show that Republicans have become a "etch a sketch" party. Anything to get a vote. Some integrity, please.

These posts under the article are right on point. I'm glad to know that voters in new jersey won't be swayed by this poorly written article. The logic is completely backwards (i.e. Star Wars, WTF? )

Here's what scares me. I am not scared about the economy or jobs - I honestly think that the economy is poised to bounce back, and will do so shortly after the election, no matter who is standing at that podium. What scares me is who is in office when that happens. With President Obama's record of championing financially cripling social programs, I am honestly scared that when the economy bounces back, any additional revenue will be instantly accounted for by unreversible social welfare programs. And then the next time this economy hits a recession (which will most definitely happen), these programs will be unsustainable, and BOOM - you have Greece.

I'm sick of all these bleeding heart liberals talking about "a hand up". It is a HAND OUT. Give me a break - people that buy this rhetoric lead obviously sheltered lives. I am a healthcare worker in Houston, and I sware, if I see one more person walk into my ER demanding they be seen because their kid has a runny nose, saying they have no money, all the while holding their new iphone with their perfectly manicured nails, wearing a gold-foil shirt that says "Obama is my homeboy", I just may lose it!

I am a single mother who worked 40 hours a week WHILE putting myself through school to get my degree. I now have a modest paying job and own a home in a nice, safe neighborhood. I have a 401k and disability insurance that I have saved for and earned MYSELF, and I have no plans to depend on social security when I am older. I worked my ass off to get where I am and I will be DAMNED if I am willing to be made to feel sorry for, or to support, those who are too lazy to do it themselves.

As someone in their 30's and an undecided voter I will say that the Republican party has done absolutely nothing to earn my vote. Sorry, Obama nay saying doesn't cut it. It's nothing new. They did the same thing last election and the one before and the one before that. The republican party strategy is to scare people into believing that unless they vote for them the world is going to end and America is going to go Communist. Not neccessarily in that order.

The "poppycock" comment was made in reference to how long the recession would last not to how long it would take to balance the budget, which are two totally different things. Balancing the budget doesn't get us out of a recession. "You would think as a reader you would make sure that you knew what you were comparing before you commented."

How can you say "emphasize individual freedom"?
Ridiculous given the fact the Republican party are clear about controlling women's choices.

You sir are an idiot. First of all how are you going to write about which candidate you are going to vote for and take up only a page, maybe less than that single spaced. You make statements and don't provide any factual details, evidence or even explain what you mean. You referenced star wars as a plan that put fear into the hearts of our enemies?! I am more afraid of the destructive power of the three stooges. There are so many things in this piece of "writing" that I am surprised that you have a job as a professor, seriously. I respect both sides of the argument when it comes to politics but you have made me stupider by reading this and it only leads me to conclude that you are an idiot. God help us all if you are in any way representative of the majority of America.

If the earth cracked open and Satan himself appeared, and announced that he was running against Mitt Romney, I would vote for Satan. At least with Satan, I know where he stands on the issues. You talk about leadership, what kind of leadership is it for a person who takes the opposite stance on every issue every few weeks? You can easily look on Youtube to compile a video of Mitt debating himself on every issue. The only core value Mitt holds is that he is interested in increasing his wealth, which is why he tries so hard to hide his money. And the only thing Mitt understands about being the President is that he wants to be president. And Mitt will do whatever it takes to achieve that goal. If only he were interested in public office for some other reason rather than his own ego.

It is beyond me how any sane person can believe the constant lying and policy changes that the slick oiled and spray tanned Mercedes car salesman Mitt Romney regurgitates over and over again.

Romney advocated for the Vietnam War but when he received his draft notice he quickly escaped to France to wait the war out. When he was 18 years old and an adult he rounded up a group of students and wrestled another boy down to cut off his hair. This fraud is nothing more than a bully and a coward.

Remember that the last "businessman to become President was Herbert Hoover who led us into the Great Depression. Romney knows nothing about foreign policy or basic economics. He was trained to buy up companies, borrow against their equity, then lay off their employees. He was outsourcer in chief at Bain Capital which allowed him to make hundreds of millions of dollars which he placed in tax shelters in the Cayman Islands and Switzerland.

I have no doubt that Romney would "use the same model", to the detriment of this country. That is why he will never receive my vote. Also, you forgot one very important trait...Honesty, which he is woely lacking.

I am concerned with freedom and fairness, which is why Romney is a terrible choice. He treats the LGBT community as second class citizens as well as ignoring women's equality. Romney is quite frankly an asshole. Voting for him means regressing our country to a land without freedom.

Umm, the candidate you are supporting said that it would take him 8-10 years as well, check the last debate transcript. You would think as a professor you would make sure the talking head you are supporting hasn't said exactly what you are decrying about the other candidate.

MR. ROMNEY: "The good news is, I’ll be happy to have you take a look. Come on our website, you’ll look at how we get to a balanced budget within eight to 10 years." - October 23 in Denver

Hmm...... So how is it poppycock?

sorry, October 22. Still doesn't change the fact that you obviously don't understand your own candidate.
