Just when you thought it was safe to get back in your car....the price of gas has risen again.
The national average price for a gallon of gasoline rose for the 10th straight day on Monday to $3.842, according to CNN. That is now only about 6.6 percent below the record high of $4.114 from July 2008, the motorist group AAA reported.
The latest increase marks a 17 percent rise since the beginning of the year.
Seven states currently have gas prices listed above $4 a gallon: Alaska, California, Connecticut, Hawaii, Illinois, New York and Washington. Gas prices are also above $4 a gallon in the District of Columbia, AAA reported.
Hawaii is the highest with prices averaging $4.44 a gallon. New Jersey is the fifth lowest -- so far -- at $3.635, but analysts are expecting prices to increase through May, News 12 reports, when vacation travel starts to kick into high gear.
Gas prices have been rising on soaring oil prices, which have also risen more than 5 percent amid fears of shortages due to volatile political tension in Iran.
