Powerball winning numbers worth $212 million

The January price hike of a Powerball ticket may pay incredible benefits to a lucky player on Wednesday.

Powerball is looking at a jackpot of $212 million for Wednesday, Aug. 8. Philly.com reports it is the third biggest prize of 2012, behind a $336.4 million pot won in Rhode Island in February, and $241 million going to Iowa in June.

The price of a Powerball ticket doubled to $2 in January, and interested observers expected to see potential jackpots of $500 million. Instead, they saw a prize of $656 million in the Mega Millions game create mass hysteria across the country in March.

Saturday, Aug. 1 marked the 12th straight time the Powerball drawing took place without a jackpot winner. Lottery Post reports the winning numbers were: 19, 30, 48, 53, and 55. The Powerball number was 18. Four players were able to match the first five numbers without the Powerball to win $1 million, none of them coming from New Jersey.

No one was able to win $2 million with the Power Play option. The lump sum value of Wednesday’s pot will be an estimated $142.9 million.

The Multi-State Lottery Association said Powerball was designed for an average jackpot of $141 million before they raised its price. At the same time, the starting Powerball jackpots increased to $40 million, and the number of Powerballs dropped from 39 to 35.

That average jackpot is expected to increase to $255 million. “We wouldn’t be doing this if we didn’t think more money would be coming back to the states to help them with revenues during these tough economic times,” MSLA spokesman Terry Rich said, according to publicgaming.com.

Children can be conned out of inheritance after multiple marriages

BY CAROL ABAYA NEWJERSEYNEWSROOM.COM THE SANDWICH GENERATION Multiple marriages and blended families can mean children get cheated out of money and assets their parent(s) earned and had before the second or third marriage. At the 2012 senior citizens’ law day conference, Lawrence A. Friedman, Bridgewater elder law attorney, said elders need to protect their children of prior marriages from being disinherited. "Even if your spouse’s current will provides for your children, your spouse may change it after you pass away,” he said. In addition to protecting one's child, an appropriate will can minimize N.J. estate taxes, which kick in if assets are over $675,000. At the conference, Cathyanne Pisciotta from North Brunswick discussed guardianship which could be necessary if various legal documents are not signed. Pisciotta said that if a person does not have a durable power of attorney (for financial affairs) and a living will (for medical decisions), anyone else can seek guardianship of that person. An expensive court proceeding is mandatory. And she said, “If one person seeks guardianship, someone else can challenge the appointment. Another relative may seek to be appointed guardian because he/she wants the money and power.”
