There seems to be a big, life-changing, bucket of money up for grabs on a regular basis in New Jersey’s lotteries these days.
Right after the group from Albany won the recent huge Mega Millions jackpot, Saturday night's Powerball drawing became the 10th consecutive drawing without a top prize winner. That increased Wednesday’s jackpot to $218 million, with a lump-sum cash option of $109.9 million.
Lottery Post reported that even without a jackpot winner, nine players matched the first five numbers for a $200,000 prize: 1 being from New Jersey.
I don’t think New Jersey would ever find the problems they’re having in Wisconsin. Millions of dollars in winnings go unclaimed every year, according to the Wisconsin Lottery. Over a 13-year period ending on June 30, 2010, a whopping $44,852,936 in lotto and jackpot prizes went unclaimed. That figure doesn't include unclaimed scratch-off winnings.
Lottery spokesman Andrew Bohage said unclaimed winnings are expected to increase by about $3 million per year.
According to postcrescent.com, in August 2009, a store sold a $1 million Powerball Power Play winning ticket, and the person who bought the ticket failed to claim the winnings within the 180-day redemption period.
That marked the second million-dollar prize in the history of the Wisconsin Lottery that wasn't paid out.
POWERBALL WINNING NUMBERS FOR WEDNESDAY, APRIL 6, 2011
10, 18, 41, 55, 56 and Powerball 15 2X
The million-dollar prizes — along with other unclaimed winnings — are directed to the lottery's property tax relief fund.
At least eleven jackpots have gone unclaimed since the beginning of Connecticut’s lottery. And according to the New York Times, there was $14 million left in Illinois in 2005. In 2002, $4.6 million was left sitting in Massachusetts. That same year, nobody stepped up to take $51.7 million in Indiana — apparently the largest forgone prize on record.
Fox News reported in 2007, a $19 million New Jersey Lottery prize wasn't claimed.
New Jersey, gives players a year to claim lottery prizes; some states let tickets expire after three or six months.
