Fiber is a good component of breakfast foods as it has "slow release" or complex carbs that tend to lower the blood sugar spike that leads to the crash you may feel 1-2 hours after a meal. According to Eating Well magazine, "Insulin levels will not spike as high and because insulin plays a role in signaling your body to store fat, having lower levels may help you to burn fat."
So The Breakfast Solution is obvious: Focus on better carbohydrate and breakfast options to start a SLOW release that will carry you through the day and not signal the body to store fat.
Here are five suggestions for a healthy breakfast.1. Scandinavian Muesli ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it )
I remember my dad making homemade muesli as a kid and chopping peaches in it. I wanted to eat Lucky Charms (well, not really, because only the marshmallows were appealing). But now I realize my dad was giving me all the love and best nutrition to fuel my day! You are getting the best whole grains (often times uncooked oats and grains) with rich protein and dairy. You can eat it with Greek yogurt or calcium rich dairy. There is always room to keep it varied and new by adding apricots, cranberries, figs, apples, cherries, walnuts, hazelnuts, almonds, and ground flax seeds. The possibilities are endless.
2. Wake-Up Smoothie
With a stash of whatever fruits you like best in your ice box, you can make your smoothie to every bit of your liking (and very quick for rushed mornings) Jump start your morning with vitamin C, fiber, potassium and soy protein. You can make a whole blender full and freeze it or keep it in separate containers ready to go in the fridge. Talk about quick...you can drink this while on driving to work!
3. Breakfast Taco/Burritos
Now this is a personal favorite! Dad you know it! Dad made these and froze them so that we could heat them up in minutes and it was such a HOT way to start the day! Make sure you use reduced-fat cheddar and egg substitute as a healthy option. Oh and those fiber wraps reduce the fat spike. These are soooo good especially if you love Mexican!
4. Breakfast Parfait
Low fat Greek yogurt is a personal choice....but any low-fat dairy and some rich vitamin fruit (even dried fruit) and you've just started the day right. Add a drop of honey or any fruit you love and layer it to psych yourself into thinking it's an indulgent decadent desert.
5. Banana Bran Muffins (I suggest making them and adding protein powder)
Ripe bananas are just right to keep muffins soft and moist and perfectly yummy! Add a handful of dark chocolate chips and enjoy a fiber rich breakfast. You can even freeze them to keep fresh and prepared ahead of time.
