A pharmaceutical company from New Jersey has partnered with Arena Pharmaceuticals to produce the first weight loss drug approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in 13 years.
The FDA has approved Belviq (lorcaserin hydrochloride), added to a reduced-calorie diet and exercise, to help control the obesity epidemic in the United States. Eisai Inc., of Woodcliff Lake, will market and distribute the drug in the U.S., while Arena will manufacture and supply the drug.
Belviq is believed to activate serotonin receptors in the brain and will suppress appetite signals, according to eisai.com.
Sky News reports that lorcaserin can be used to treat obese adults with a body mass index of 30 or higher, or overweight adults with a BMI figure of 27 or more who have at least one weight-related condition such as high blood pressure, or high cholesterol.
