The scene last Thursday was outside a courthouse in Oslo last week where Anders Behring Breivik is on trial for mass murder. In a mass protest toward Breivik, more than 40,000 Norwegians linked arms in the rain and sang the song, “Children of the Rainbow,” a Norwegian version of “My Rainbow Race” by American folk singer Pete Seeger. Lyrics for “Children of the Rainbow” were written by Lillebjørn Nilsen, a Norwegian singer-songwriter from the 1970s.
According to Periscope Post, Breivik is accused of murdering 77 people at a Labour Party youth camp in July 2011. He calls himself a militant nationalist, and has called Nilsen a "Marxist" who "writes music that is used to brainwash children."
Breivik said, “They put up these songs and propaganda films to get students to despise their forefathers.” The Guardian reported that Breivik called his victims "traitors" who deserved to die for having values that he believed opened Europe to Muslim invasion.
“Children of the Rainbow” sings about a "World where every sister and every brother shall live together - like small children of the rainbow,” according to the Norway Post.
CNN reported that two women enlisted others on Facebook to join them in singing “Children of the Rainbow.” By Tuesday, the total accepting the invitation was 4,000, and 10 times that arrived in central Oslo's Youngstorget Square.
