Super Bowl 2014: Pete Carroll Stands Corrected

BY BOB HOLT

Ticketholders and those who plan to watch the Super Bowl are reminded that MetLife Stadium and East Rutherford are located in New Jersey, which means the game is being played in New Jersey.

Seattle Seahawks coach Pete Carroll was the defensive coordinator and then head coach of the New York Jets between 1990 and 1994. He recently held his first Super Bowl press conference in Jersey City.

That, by the way, is also in New Jersey. Carroll knows that, but he said he was glad to be back in New York.

A local politician recalculated for Carroll. "Coach, I'm Rich Boggiano with the city council,” he said, according to NJ.com. “You said you're glad to be back in New York, I just want to remind you, you're in New Jersey."

Carroll understood, and corrected himself. “We were the New York Jets but we were playing in New Jersey so that’s always been an issue,” Carroll said, according to The Washington Post.  “I understand. I appreciate it. Sorry it came out that way.”

Boggiano has lived in Jersey City for the past 40 years, and is in his first year as a councilman. Others at the press conference appreciated his correction of Carroll. "I didn't want to embarrass him," Boggiano said, according to NJ.com. "But..."

Steve Politi noted that the NFL did put “NY/NJ” on its logo, but says the league gave New Jersey just a fraction of the cover of its official Super Bowl game program. We’re “directly below the Lombardi Trophy near the very edge, that it could be mistaken for a smudge,” Politi said, according to NJ.com.
