Judy covered Superior Court in Union County for six years. She has written about crime, divorce, and politics. She covered the sensational divorce trial of former New Jersey Gov. James E. McGreevey. Along with Star-Ledger colleague Robin Gaby Fisher, Lucas also investigated the crimes of notorious killer Robert Zarinsky. Garden State Association of Black Journalists named Lucas Journalist of the Year in 2005. She worked for the Star-Ledger for eight years. Judy continues to cover a variety of topics for New Jersey Newsroom.
