During a record-setting year for Hollywood at the box office, “The Avengers” led the way in 2012 by grossing about $1.5 million in ticket sales around the world.

Then there was the other end of the tote board.

Actor Christian Slater has been in a few films that most people have heard of- whether they liked the films or not. That list includes “Heathers,” “True Romance,” “Gleaming the Cube,” and “Hard Rain.” But Movieline reports that Slater’s horror film “Playback” was released to theater in March, and became the lowest grossing film of 2012.

Yes, theater. “Playback” appeared in ONE cinema for a week, earning $252 dollars on opening night, and $12 for the rest of its run, for a grand total of $264 in box office earnings.

Based on U.S. ticket price averages, The Nation reported that about 33 people saw “Playback.”

The Huffington Post reported that "Oogieloves In The BIG Balloon Adventure" became the lowest grossing film in wide release of all time in 2012. This past September it earned $448,000, appearing in 2,160 theaters.

The interactive children’s movie, featuring cameos from Chazz Palmentieri, Christopher Lloyd and Cloris Leachman, averaged just $207 per theater. A wide release is considered a film that opens in 2,000 or more theaters.

Vibe reported that the budget for Playback was $7.5 milion. But that film looked good next to “Zyzzyx Road” starring Katherine Heigl, from 2007. That movie, the lowest grossing of all time, brought in $30, possible cab fare to the theater, at the box office.
