Steven Tyler said that when he took the judge’s seat for American Idol, show producers wanted him to become the next Simon Cowell. But now that Tyler has left the bright lights of Hollywood, he is ready to return to his Aerosmith.
"The show's about kids and what you do to nurture their talents," Tyler said, according to gather.com. "The show producers wanted me to take the P**s out of the contestants...That's not what I'm about."
Tyler first became an American Idol judge in 2010, when he and the Aerosmith band members were having problems. “It's just the normal workings of a dysfunctional family, everybody says stuff,” guitarist Joe Perry said to sfgate.com.
As far as how they’re getting along on the current tour, Perry adds, “Let's put it this way, I take the bus he takes the plane. We all have different lives.”
Aerosmith bassist Tom Hamilton said Tyler’s American Idol job became an issue in band meetings. "The whole plan of how we were going to deal with Idol is something we hammered out last year. It almost got to the point of using real hammers," he said, according to Hollywood Reporter.
Hamilton said Tyler’s absence didn’t hold up the band’s recording of the new album. "What would have slowed us down is if we released the album and only had a few weeks to tour behind it," added Hamilton.
“I loved it and hated it,” Tyler told Rolling Stone about being an Idol judge. “I sat next to J. Lo and I made a ton of money. It became larger than life."
MTV.com reports that Aerosmith’s first studio album since 2004, "Music From Another Dimension!" is scheduled for release in November. The record features a duet with Carrie Underwood, and appearances from Julian Lennon and backing vocals from Tyler’s friend Johnny Depp.
