Samuel L. Jackson is so riled up over A.O. Scott’s review of “The Avengers” in the New York Times yesterday, that within hours he went on the warpath and tweeted, “NY Times critic AO Scott needs a new job! Let’s help him find one! One he can ACTUALLY do!”
Mr. Scott’s fighting words? He described the film as “a snappy little dialogue comedy dressed up as something else, that something else being a giant A.T.M. for Marvel and its new studio overlords, the Walt Disney Company.”
Then Mr. Scott went on to say, “while ‘The Avengers” is hardly worth raging about, its failures are significant and dispiriting. The light, amusing bits cannot overcome the grinding, hectic emptiness, the bloated cynicism that is less a shortcoming of this particular film than a feature of the genre.”
We’re guessing what Mr. Jackson really took umbrage at was this: “Mr. Jackson, with an eye patch and his well-practiced bellow, is more master of ceremonies than mission commander, and under his watch the Avengers indulge in some Rat Pack-y horsing around.”
After Mr. Jackson’s Twitter blast trashing Mr. Scott, there was a flood of mainly fanboy Tweets from gushing fans of Mr. Jackson and the comic book franchise. However, “TheFilmNest,” had the temerity to suggest people could think what they want of the film, and two hours after Mr. Jackson’s bashing of Mr. Scott, they tweeted:
“TheFilmNest Disappointed to hear @SamuelLJackson respond irrationally to negative review of #Avengers. People aren’t entitled to their own opinion?”
Right back at you, minutes later Mr. Jackson wrote, “That is My Opinion@TheFilmNest & what’s irrational about it? They aren’t going to fire his jaundiced ass & You & I Know it!”
Whoa!
This prompted this tweet, less than an hour ago, from “grampa44511@SamuelLJackson@GheFilmNest Jauncided ass? Hmmm is that another way of saying Lily White Ass Sammie???”
We know Mr. Scott and we can say he’s a healthy, good-looking guy with a fairly health glow. No sign of jaundice last time we saw him.
Anyway, the tweets have been following fast and furious with fans mainly weighing in in favor of Mr. Jackson, like this recent tweet, from “AndersMoe1981@SamuelLJackson@TheFilmNest#Avengers is absolutely KICK ASS and Mr Scott needs to check himself into #Rehab or something.”
But some of the tweets said Mr. Jackson needed to chill. From, “littlestpicshow@SamuelLJackson@TheFilmNest. Why on earth would someone be fired for not liking a film? Film criticism is (largely) subjective. Calm down.”
Coincidentally, The Film Nest has been crushing on the film. Only the other day it posted a video with “The Avengers’’ director Joss Whedon narrating a fight between Iron Man and Thor, where they said “The Avengers’ will be the biggest movie of the summer is no stretch,” and “the movie has ‘hit’ written all over it.” (http://thefilmnest.com/?s=avengers&x=0&y=0)
We know how these things end. Mr. Jackson will get the last laugh. According to Box Office Mojo (http://boxofficemojo.com/), “The Avengers,” has already won over the foreign market. It opened last week overseas and has already earned a whopping $281.1 million in only its first eight days in theaters. Mojo said this is more than any of the superheroes earned in their entire run with the exception of “Iron Man 2,” although Mojo said it will pass that movie’s $311.5 million on Friday.
