The Beach Boys will be bringing their 50th anniversary tour to the PNC Arts Center in Holmdel on Wednesday.
Their current tour is the first time in years that the band has performed together. Co-founder Brian Wilson has admitted a dislike of performing live, and has suffered from mental problems. Brothers Dennis Wilson passed away in 1983 and Carl Wilson died in 1998.
The Beach Boys even released a new album, "That's Why God Made the Radio," for the tour. According to Newsmax.com, it debuted at No. 3 on the Billboard charts, topping the Beatles for most weeks on Billboard’s top-10 album listings.
The band began in 1961 in Los Angeles County. The 50th anniversary tour has more than 60 concerts scheduled, and is still being extended.
The band played in New Jersey last month at the Borgata in Atlantic City. 10 other musicians were on stage with them at that performance, according to the Press of Atlantic City. They included two percussionists, four guitarists, two keyboardists, a bass player and a saxophonist.
According to NorthJersey.com, the current group features three surviving original members, pianist and singer Brian Wilson, 70; his cousin, singer Mike Love, 71; and guitarist Al Jardine, 69. Added for the tour are David Marks, who was with the group in the early days, and Bruce Johnston, who joined The Beach Boys in 1965, after Glen Campbell went on a solo career.
Johnston said the tour has been really fun. “It's the right kind of hard work,” he said. “The fans love it. Brian Wilson can do no wrong,” he said.
The Beach Boys 50th Anniversary Tour will be at the PNC Bank Arts Center Wednesday, June 27 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are available at livenation.com.
