Beach Boys singer Mike Love said the band’s 50th anniversary reunion tour had a specific beginning and an ending to commemorate their 50 years of music.
Last week, members of the classic version of The Beach Boys were celebrating the opening of a new exhibit at the Grammy Museum in Los Angeles, “Good Vibrations -- 50 Years of the Beach Boys.”
But Love had raised questions about the band’s future a day earlier. According to Yahoo! Music, Love, who owns the rights to the Beach Boys name, announced that he planned to remove Brian Wilson, Al Jardine and David Marks from the band, and replace them with his own band. Wilson is Love’s cousin.
“You’ve got to be careful not to get overexposed,” Love said, according to the Los Angeles Times. “There are promoters who are interested in more shows, but they’ve said, ‘Give it a rest for a year.”
Love did say that his decision applied only to touring with the band, and he wouldn’t mind writing more songs with Wilson and recording together.
Fans of the Beach Boys want to see the group continue. Charles Orlik started an online petition intended for Love.
According to ipetitions.com, the petition reads, "In order to preserve the validity of 'The Beach Boys' as a whole, and not as a 'money saving, stripped down version' that only contains one original member, and one member that joined in 1965, we ask you to reinstate the three other members to the touring group for your final years performing. It's the right thing to do, and it's what the fans want!”
Wilson said at the Los Angeles ceremony, according to Rolling Stone, "I wouldn't mind getting together with Mike and the guys and making an exciting rock & roll album."
Billboard reports that sources say Brian Wilson has continued writing songs for a follow-up album to “That’s Why God Made the Radio.” But the only new release that is set will be a live album from Capitol in 2013.
Some are saying the band could have added about a dozen more concert dates in the UK. Two shows in London are scheduled to wrap up the reunion tour.
