Neither gives as nuanced a performance as Bana, but both acquit themselves well in what could be a trite set-up. For the sake of future psychological well-being, though, it may be unfortunate that the plot does not allow Liza to follow her impulse to move along.

Playing a dumber version of his “Sons of Anarchy” character, Hunnam may not be George Clooney in the looks department, but undressed he is built like a reinforced concrete outhouse. Wilde starts off with the overly glam look often inflicted on her — with so much make-up she looks like a 45-year-old playing 28 — but looks and acts naturally as the story goes on.

“Deadfall” is not a perfect noir, but it does offer thrills to go along with its scenically chilly setting. (With its film tax credit programs, Michigan has begun standing in for other states in some projects, but here it is played by Québec.)

Best of all, it has those economical actors, the emotional Spacek and the dignified Kristofferson presiding over a holiday meal. And Bana, Wilde and Hunnam all prove they belong alongside Mara at the adult table.
