Her jewelry can suggest summer and seashore — the soft, pastel shades with cool silver and the spiral shaped forms that seem inspired by the nautilus shell. Nancy Troske's work fits right in with this month's theme for the Second Saturday artists reception in Lawrenceville: "Down the Shore."
With those who drop into the gallery for a look, artist-members of the Lawrenceville Main Street Artists Network will celebrate all things seashore from 4 - 7 p.m. on July 10. Many of the group's members regularly visit the Jersey shore, while some opt for Nantucket or other coastal places by the beautiful sea. Their multi-media art offerings will reflect all that.
Since it's high season for going "down the shore," this art exhibition should resonate with seashore regulars and wannabes alike. And no one will leave it with sand between their toes or a sunburn. Two musicians will provide accompaniment outside the gallery, weather permitting. Keyboardist Barry Wilcox and singer Doraleena "Lady D" Sammons-Posey — both of "The Music Project" band — will offer jazz and blues.
One of the newest gallery members, Troske includes bracelets, earrings, necklaces, rings and brooches in her collection of contemporary jewelry. Her work, she says, "involves mainly cloisonné enameling, an ancient metalworking technique, and a multi-step enameling process."
Based in Princeton, Troske was trained in classic jewelry-making techniques that include chainmaking and metalsmithing. After earning her BFA, she studied in New York City and San Francisco. She also teaches jewelry-making in the area.
Now up to 31 artist-members who work in most of the predictable mediums, the network's been in existence only since late 2009. Since then, members have turned a four-room storefront into their gallery, offered art classes for kids and adults, run a summer art camp for children and generally made their presence felt around town — boosting other businesses, displaying art in local restaurants and turning up at community events.
Although it's easy to find at the corner of Gordon Ave. and Main St., a.k.a. Route 206, in downtown Lawrenceville, the gallery still has a landmark: a child-high once-green pear out front. Now bright pink — and who knows what shade it may be tomorrow — this member-made concrete fruit is more slender than most pears. If "pink pear" is the template, having a "pear-shaped body" wouldn't be so bad.
Come on "down the shore."
